Canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) or dry-eye syndrome often is treated with a cyclosporine ointment. Cyclosporine’s benefits for dry-eye patients includes its ability to increase the secretion of physiologic tears (as opposed to artificial tears).
Physiologic tears contain growth factors and antibodies which facilitate healing. Most canine KCS patients require lifelong treatment, and interruptions in treatment can lead to relapses.
In cases where the cyclosporine ointment is not available, or when it is very difficult for a dog owner to administer ointment to the eyes, it is possible to compound cyclosporine drops. This 1 percent or 2 percent solution of cyclosporine is easier to administer but carries the same therapeutic benefits.
